Modern Walk-In Shower Bathroom Transformation

Paul and Judith had renovated their bathroom some twenty years ago, fitting a large bath and separate shower. More recently they had begun to feel the set-up was no longer working for them,

“We were finding the bath less practical as we got a bit older,” says Judith, “We much preferred the shower, and in fact, the bath was only being used by our grandchildren!”

Judith came up with the idea of removing the bath entirely, and replacing it with an easy-to-use, double-ended walk-in shower. Not knowing whether this was possible, she and Paul did some online research and investigated the local options. On their initial visit to our showroom, they were greeted on reception, and shown around,

“The showroom was quite something,” says Paul, “We felt very welcome, and there was so much on display. We also discovered that Gardiner Haskins could manage the installation as well as supplying the products. Not everyone offered that complete package, but it was what we really wanted. We were given a lot of brochures to take home, and we made an appointment to meet David, the designer.”

Sitting down with David, Judith and Paul found the computerised design process swift and straightforward. David  created clear graphics, illustrating on screen the various  combinations and layouts they could have. He started with the idea of the walk-in shower, sitting it where the bath had been originally. Next came the storage Judith had requested. A tall, roomy cabinet was easily integrated into the new design, along with a washstand with two deep drawers below. For easy cleaning and a spacious feel, the storage cabinet and washstand are wall-hung. Judith and Paul settled on simple, contemporary fixtures and elegant brushed brass taps and shower fittings. Thinking of future needs, David also suggested a small matching brass handrail to be fitted discreetly inside the shower,

“I think it’s actually a towel rail, but fitted the other way up, it’s perfect,” says Judith, “David was incredibly knowledgeable. He knew just where to source whatever we asked for. It only took us a couple of hours with him to agree the plan and select most of the products.”

Choosing the tiles took a little longer, but Judith and Paul picked out a large marble-look tile for both the walls and floor. The walls have a polished finish, while the floor tiles are matt, making a safe, non-slip surface. There was one follow-up appointment and everything was finalised within about three weeks of the initial meeting. David then put Paul and Judith in contact with one of our recommended installers, Ben Clarke of C.L. Solutions.

“Ben was quite busy, so couldn’t start immediately, but we took that as a good sign,” says Paul, “Once the work began, he was excellent, and very on the ball, making sure things progressed as smoothly as possible.”

“The whole team was nice to have around,” adds Judith, “We had different contractors for the plumbing, tiling and even to apply the mastic sealant, but they were well-organised. Everyone did a good job and the finish is lovely.”

Paul and Judith are hard-pressed to say which aspects of their new bathroom they are most pleased with. Judith is delighted with the tall storage cabinets that hold towels, extra toiletries and cleaning materials,

“Before, I had to keep things under the stairs, but now everything is in the bathroom where we need it,” she says.

Both love the bright, modern look and the feeling of light in the room. The design incorporates easy maintenance features such as the shower screen’s water repellent coating to minimise build-up of limescale, and the WC’s position against the wall so dust and debris don’t gather at the back. There are thoughtful extras too, like the handily-positioned towel warmer outside the shower, and smart brass-framed, circular mirror which has touch-control lighting and a heated demister function,

Reviewing their experience, Paul and Judith agree they made the right choice in trusting Gardiner Haskins with their bathroom update and future-proofing,

“From the word ‘go’, everyone was so friendly and helpful. The customer service was excellent, and we were impressed by David’s expertise and the installers’ skills,” says Paul, “I would definitely recommend Gardiner Haskins.”

FAQ

Are walk-in showers a good replacement for a bath?

Walk-in showers can work particularly well for homeowners looking to create a more practical and streamlined bathroom layout. Removing a rarely used bath often frees up valuable floor space, helping the room feel lighter, easier to maintain and more comfortable to use day to day. Walk-in shower designs can also support better accessibility and long-term flexibility within the home.

How can a bathroom be designed for future needs without looking overly clinical?

Future-focused bathroom design often works best when practical features are integrated subtly into the overall scheme. Wall-hung furniture, walk-in showers, discreet support rails and easy-clean surfaces can all help improve comfort and usability while maintaining a calm, contemporary feel. The result is a bathroom that supports changing needs without compromising on atmosphere or style.

Do walk-in showers make smaller bathrooms feel more spacious?

Yes. Walk-in showers with minimal framing and clear glass panels often help bathrooms feel more open by improving sightlines and allowing light to move more freely through the room. Combined with wall-hung storage and large-format tiles, this approach can create a more balanced and uncluttered feel overall.

What storage works best in a modern bathroom renovation?

Integrated storage often helps modern bathrooms feel calmer and more organised day to day. Tall cabinets, wall-hung vanity units and concealed storage solutions can reduce clutter while maintaining a cleaner and more cohesive overall layout. Thoughtful storage planning is particularly valuable in bathrooms where practicality and ease of maintenance are important considerations.

Why are wall-hung bathroom units becoming more popular?

Wall-hung furniture helps create a lighter and more contemporary feel by exposing more floor area and simplifying cleaning around the room. This approach can make bathrooms feel more spacious while also supporting a cleaner visual flow, particularly in modern renovation projects focused on practicality and ease of use.

Can bathroom renovations improve everyday comfort?

Yes. Many successful bathroom renovations focus as much on usability and comfort as visual appearance. Layout changes, improved storage, better lighting and practical details such as accessible showers or easier-to-clean finishes can all help make daily routines feel calmer, smoother and more enjoyable over time.
