Our 200 Year History

Founded in 1825 as a small ironmongery, the business has grown into one of the city’s best-known interiors specialists. From the very beginning, its reputation was built on quality craftsmanship, dependable service, and close relationships with local customers - values that continue to define the company today.

Our bicentenary marks more than the passage of time; it celebrates two centuries of helping Bristol residents create comfortable, stylish homes.

The company was formally registered as Gardiner Sons & Co Ltd in 1893, having already traded for almost 70 years. Established in the 1820s as a blacksmith and ironmonger, Gardiners initially produced practical metal goods for the people of Bristol. As the business expanded through the Victorian era, it operated several large factories manufacturing everything from door handles to ornate iron gates for stately homes.

Among its most notable products were cast-iron kitchen ranges — the predecessors of today’s modern range cookers, which the company still supplies. One of these historic ranges can now be seen at Blaise Castle Museum in Bristol, where it was donated to the collection during the 1980s.

Gardiners’ reputation for precision and quality attracted distinguished customers. One of the most famous was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who commissioned the company to create bespoke drawing instruments, including scale dividers made to his own design. Engraved with “Gardiners Bristol,” these tools are now preserved at the Brunel Institute beside the SS Great Britain.

In the early twentieth century, the company further diversified into large-scale metal fabrication. Its work included structural features for the entrance to the Festival of Britain and elements of the steel framework inside the iconic twin towers of the original Wembley (Empire) Stadium, built in 1923.

Through every chapter of its history, from ironmongery to interiors, Gardiner Haskins Interiors has remained rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and service to the Bristol community.

FAQ

What defines a modern kitchen design?

Modern kitchens typically focus on clean lines, integrated storage and a more streamlined overall appearance. Contemporary layouts often prioritise simplicity and practicality while still creating spaces that feel warm, welcoming and connected to everyday living. Materials, lighting and colour palettes all play an important role in shaping the final atmosphere of the room.

Are handleless kitchens practical for everyday use?

Yes. Handleless kitchens are designed to create a cleaner visual flow while still supporting day-to-day functionality. Integrated grip rails and uninterrupted cabinetry lines can help movement through the space feel smoother, particularly in busy family kitchens and open-plan layouts.

Can modern kitchens still feel warm and inviting?

Absolutely. Contemporary kitchens increasingly combine streamlined cabinetry with textured finishes, timber details, layered lighting and softer colour palettes to create spaces that feel relaxed rather than clinical. The balance between practicality and atmosphere is often what makes modern kitchens feel more enduring over time.

How important is storage in a modern kitchen?

Storage is central to how a modern kitchen functions day to day. Integrated larders, concealed storage, deep drawers and appliance housing can all help reduce clutter while maintaining a calmer and more organised feel throughout the room. Thoughtful storage planning often has a significant impact on how balanced the kitchen feels long term.

Can modern kitchens work in period properties?

Yes. Contemporary kitchens can work beautifully within older homes when materials, colours and layouts are chosen carefully in relation to the architecture of the property. Combining modern functionality with warmer finishes and more considered detailing often helps create a balanced contrast between traditional and contemporary elements

Seeing kitchens assembled within complete living environments often helps customers better understand how different styles may work within their own home and lifestyle.
