How to Clean Your Mattress
We spend roughly one third of our lives in bed, so it’s no surprise that mattresses gradually collect dust, sweat and everyday wear over time. Even with a fitted sheet and bedding in place, your mattress still absorbs moisture and small particles during nightly use.
Regular cleaning can help keep your mattress fresh, improve hygiene and extend its lifespan. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to cleaning your mattress at home.
Remove All Bedding
Start by stripping the bed completely. Remove sheets, pillowcases, mattress protectors and pillow covers, then wash them according to the care instructions.
Washing bedding regularly at the highest safe temperature helps remove bacteria, sweat and dust. It’s also a good opportunity to air the mattress while the bedding is off.
Vacuum the Mattress
Next, vacuum the surface of the mattress using the upholstery or narrow nozzle attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
Work slowly across the surface, applying gentle pressure so the nozzle can reach into seams and stitching where dust tends to gather. Be sure to vacuum the sides of the mattress as well.
If your mattress is designed to be turned, you can flip it over and repeat the process on the other side.
While you’re cleaning, it’s also worth vacuuming the bed frame or divan base, as dust can collect between joints and edges.
Treat Fresh Spills Quickly
If you spill something on your mattress, act quickly.
Use a clean damp cloth to blot the liquid and absorb as much moisture as possible. Avoid scrubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the mattress fibres.
Spot Clean Stains Carefully
Older stains can often be removed with gentle spot cleaning.
A small amount of mild cleaning solution applied to a cloth or soft brush can help lift stains. Use light circular motions and avoid soaking the mattress.
If your mattress contains memory foam, take extra care not to use too much liquid, as these materials should not become heavily saturated.
Deodorise the Mattress
To freshen your mattress, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) evenly across the surface.
Leave it for at least 30 minutes — or ideally a couple of hours — so it can absorb odours and moisture. Afterwards, vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove the powder.
Let the Mattress Air
Once cleaning is complete, allow the mattress to air out fully. Open windows to improve ventilation and, if possible, allow sunlight into the room.
Good airflow helps remove lingering odours and ensures the mattress dries properly.
How Often Should You Clean a Mattress?
Many people rarely clean their mattress, but doing so once or twice a year can make a noticeable difference.
If your mattress is designed to be rotated or turned every 3–6 months, this is a good opportunity to vacuum and refresh it at the same time.
Tips to Keep Your Mattress Cleaner for Longer
A few simple habits can help keep your mattress in good condition:
Use a mattress protector to reduce moisture and dirt reaching the mattress
Rotate or turn your mattress every 3–6 months if recommended
Clean spills as soon as they occur
Wash bedding regularly, ideally once per week
Occasionally air the mattress while changing sheets
When Might It Be Time for a New Mattress?
Even with good care, mattresses don’t last forever.
If your mattress feels uncomfortable, no longer provides proper support or still smells and looks worn despite cleaning, it may be time to replace it.
