How unclean is your mattress?

We spend around a third of our lives in bed. That’s thousands of hours lying on the same surface, night after night.

Even if your mattress looks spotless and smells fresh, what’s happening beneath the sheets might surprise you. Over time, completely natural things like skin cells, sweat and dust can build up inside your mattress, which is why regular care (and eventually replacement) is so important.

Before you reach for the cleaning products, here’s what you should know.

Skin Cells: A Natural Build-Up

As we sleep, our bodies naturally shed dead skin. In fact, research from the Sleep Council suggests the average person sheds around 454g of skin per year.

Given that we spend roughly a third of our time in bed, a significant amount of that ends up in our bedding and mattress. It’s completely normal, but it does mean your mattress collects more than you might think over time.

Night-Time Perspiration

We don’t just sleep, we regulate temperature while we sleep.

The Sleep Council reports that adults can produce up to 285ml of sweat per night. While your sheets absorb much of this, moisture can gradually work its way into the mattress itself, especially if you don’t use a mattress protector.

Over months and years, this can affect freshness and hygiene and even the performance of the mattress fillings.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are microscopic and present in most homes, particularly in soft furnishings.

Beds provide a warm environment, and over time mattresses can contain thousands of dust mites. While they’re invisible to the eye, their presence (and waste particles) can aggravate allergies or asthma in some people.

Regular vacuuming with an upholstery attachment and washing bedding at high temperatures can help minimise this.

Bacteria & Hygiene

Moisture, warmth and organic matter create the perfect environment for bacteria to develop over time.

Even if you shower before bed (which certainly helps!), your body will still perspire naturally overnight. That’s why good mattress hygiene is important and why mattresses don’t last forever.

How to Keep Your Mattress Cleaner for Longer

The good news? There’s plenty you can do:

  • Use a quality mattress protector (wash it regularly)

  • Change and wash bedding weekly at 60°C where possible

  • Vacuum your mattress every few months

  • Air your mattress by pulling back the duvet in the morning

  • Rotate your mattress (if suitable) as recommended by the manufacturer

These steps can help extend the life of your mattress and maintain a healthier sleep environment.

When Cleaning Isn’t Enough

Even with the best care, mattresses have a lifespan.

Most manufacturers recommend replacing your mattress every 7–10 years, depending on the type and quality. Over time, fillings compress, support weakens and hygiene becomes harder to maintain, no matter how much you clean it.

If you’re waking up:

  • Achy or stiff

  • Feeling unrested

  • With visible sagging in your mattress

  • Or your mattress is over 8–10 years old

…it might be time to consider an upgrade.
